He died of a heart attack while in Little Company of Mary Hospital, Illinois.
After his football career, hee became a surgeon who experimented with using blood from
recently deceased cadavers for transfusions. Evidently, he did it successfully many times in
the 1930's, but never wrote his findings up formally, and they didn't get published till long
after his death. There is a reference to the process being used in a Time Magazine article
from 1961. Unbelievably, one of the two physicians involved in the process in 1961
was Dr. Jack Kevorkian.
