Here is an excerpt from a great article about Mr. Leonard Jay 'Lenny' Thom:
Leonard Thom was the Executive Officer aboard PT 109, the boat that launched
the legend of John Kennedy. He was a key player in the drama that followed that
boat's sinking. Like so many others who came into JFK's orbit, Lenny Thom has
become but a footnote in the history books. He deserves so much more. Even if
Lenny Thom had never met Jack Kennedy, his would still be a life worth remembering.
He was a true American hero, friend, husband, brother, and father, whose life ended
far too soon.
He played football at Ohio State and was an All-Star tackle and guard. He then
played for the Columbus Bullies in 1941. At one point, the Chicago Bears were
interested in Lenny's talent offering him $1,000 to sign with the team and another
$500 per game. Lenny had other things on his mind and passed up the chance. He
Lt. John F. Kennedy. Ty Harding played the part of Ensign Leonard J. Thom.
