Did you know?

After a nine year career with the Cleveland Browns, John Wooten was released on July 19,

1968.  It all had to do with a racial incident.  On July 1st, a golf tournament was held in

Ashland, OhioRoss Fichtner was handling the arrangements for the event.   Wooten

said that there were no African American players invited to this years event as they had

been in previous years.  He accused Fichtner of prejudice.  Fichtner responded and said

that no racial slurs were intended and that the size of the tournament was cut down.  After

the feud became public, owner Art Modell decided to release both players for their benefit

and for the team.

John Wooten was picked up by the Washington Redskins in mid-August and played his

final year of pro-football with them.
