He was unable to withstand the shock of having both legs amputated as

a result of an accident he suffered at the American Tube and Stamping Company

and died the next day. 

He was injured shortly before 10am when a large crane on elevated tracks ran

over him.  He was rushed to the Bridgeport hospital where the doctors had to

perform emergency surgery.  His right leg was amputated just below the knee

and his left leg was amputated at the ankle.

At the time of his death, he was considered one of the greatest football players

to ever come out of Connecticut.


Jimmy Hammill graduated from Bridgeport High School, in Connecticut.
