There was a back named "Warren", who supposedly played for the Hammond Pros in
1920, for whom no one even has a first name. He is also listed in both Treat and
the NFL reference books just as "Warren".
There are several references on various Hammond teams, starting with Hammond
High School in 1917, on up through 1927 for various semi-pro teams, for a back
named "Warne", which is very similar to "Warren". Warne was the captain in
1917 and went into the U.S. Army. There were several football references to him
through the 1920's. Unfortunately, the only references to his first name was by
using his nickname, "Gluke".
There were only a couple "Warnes" from that time frame in Hammond, and one
of themwas named Glenn. The only reference after 1927 for either "Gluke Warne"
or "Glenn Warne" was an ad in a 1934 Hammond paper, advertising live music
at Gluke Warne's Bar. The 1940 census lists Glenn Warne's occupation as
Considering that this guy definitely played football in Hammond in that time
period, andsince no one has the slightest bit of information on 'Warren', this
has to be the guy.
