MOBILE, Alabama, 02/25/41 - Search was resumed by the coast guard at dawn today for
Ben Smith, former Alabama University football star, and Sidney Crowley, Spring Hill
student football manager, missing since Sunday in an estuary of Mobile Bay.
Capt. J.P. Jones of the coast guard picket boat said he found their small boat,
hung on a snag about 30 feet from a bank.
Smith, assistant football coach at Spring Hill, and Crowley left Mobile Saturday
on a fishing trip. They were last reported late Sunday when they bought gasoline
for their motorboat at a Blakely, Alabama service station. After starring at Alabama,
Smith joined the Washington Redskins football team. He later became assistant coach
at Spring Hill, where his brother, Earle Smith, is head coach.
MOBILE, Alabama 03/17/41 - The body of Ben Smith, assistant coach at Spring Hill
College, who disappeared with a companion, February 23rd, was found in the Tensas River
today near where their swamped boat was discovered. The body was located by
Lawrence Stauter, fishing lodge operator, and identity established by friends from the
clothing and a watch Smith carried.
The spot was about five miles from where the body of Sidney Crowley, Smith's companion on
the trip, was found several days ago. The discovery ended a search that had been underway
since the young men left thier party in a skiff to obtain gasoline for a power boat.
