About Me

I study San Jose State College's athletic program between 1920 and 1969. The program, which is well known for the stance taken by two of its athletes, John Carlos and Tommie Smith, on the podium at the 1968 Olympic Games, offered coaching opportunities to people of color decades ahead of most U.S. colleges.

Attached is a picture of SJSC's head football coach, Dr. Dudley DeGroot, and his staff. DeGroot, a 1924 Olympian, was a well-known ornithologist. He also brought the first Black football players to the Spartans' campus during the mid-to-late 1930s.

DeGroot coached the Washington Redskins during the early 1940s. I am trying to locate any pictures I can find of him. I did see one on this site where he was in an airplane going over game plans with his team.

The photo includes (l-r) Walt McPherson, DeWitt Portal, Bill Hubbard, DeGroot, Pop Warner, and Wallace Denny.
