Major Maxwell S. MacCollum, base adjutant of Stout Army Air Field died of burns
when he led a rescue chain formed in an effort to save two cadets, strapped in a plane
which had crashed into a hangar. He was one the wing tip as the plane exploded.
He died at the hospital at Stout Field, Indianapolis, Indiana. He was cited for heroism.
