1. JACOB ABRAHAM 'JAKE' KAUFFMAN - 1925 Frankford - attended U of Pennsylvania.  He was born in Russia, on 02/22/03, and died in Miami Beach, FL, on 04/18/61.  His obit in the Asbury Park (NJ) Press, of 04/26/61, mentions that he was an attorney who had played basketball and football at Penn in the 1920's.

2. EDWARD PAUL JONES LISTON - 1930 Newark - attended Georgetown, West Point.  He was born 11/25/03 in Washington, PA, and died 08/14/52 in Bradenton, FL.  Obit is in the Monongahela (PA) Daily of 08/15/52, and Pittsburgh Press of 08/29/52.  He used the name 'Paul Liston'. Data corroborated by a family member.  Person listed on other sites, who died in Massachusetts in 1979, is not the player.

3.  JOHN LAWRENCE 'MEL, or MELLON' DOHERTY - 1921 Cin - He is listed in various places as John Mellon Doherty and Lawrence Mellon Doherty, but birth and draft card records seem to favor John Lawrence.  He used the name Mellon Doherty after his football career, when he became a prominent band-leader in the Cincinnati area.  I also found an article in an old newspaper listing him as Frank Doherty, but I found nothing else supporting that name.

Thank you.

3A.

I just noticed in explaining all the various names for Mel Doherty , I never bothered to include his data. He was born 04/21/1896 in Cincinnati, and died there 07/17/42. Obit in Cincinnati Enquirer, 07/18/42.

4.   FREDERICK JAMES 'FRED' KING  - 1937 Bkn - attended Irvington (NY) HS, Hobart College - He was born in Irvington, NY, on 03/04/12, and died in Suffolk, VA,  on 01/11/03.  Obit in VA Pilot, 01/13/03. There is a good article about him in the Finger Lakes Times of 04/12/15, prior to the draft of Hobart player Ali Marpet.  Until that time, KIng was the only Hobart player to play in the NFL.  Person who died in MA in 1987 is not the player.

5. WALTER AUGUST VOIGT (VOIGHT) - 1920 Chi Tigers, 1921 Hammond, Chi Cards - He was born 07/03/1895 in Oak Park, IL, and died in Helena, MI, on 06/26/37.  Obit in Chi Tribune, 06/30/37. Data from MI Death Index. Person who died in 1976 is not the player.

6. CHARLES STAGG ROGERS - 1927-1929 Frankford - attended U of Pennsylvania. He was born in NYC, 11/05/02, and died 10/  /86. He is listed on some sites as being born in Camden, NJ, on 01/15/02, and dying on 06/26/66.  His 1925 passport application, when he was  traveling to England for a track and field competition, lists his birth date as 11/05/02 in NYC.  SSDI lists the person with that birth date as dying in October, 1986. I have been unable to obtain an obit to get the exact date.

Thank you.

7. SOL EDWARD WEINBERG (WEINBERGER) - 1923 Cleveland - attended Cleveland Central HS, Western Reserve U. I was looking for an exact death date for Sol Weinberg, who was born in NYC on 11/20/1895, and supposedly died in 1962. That birthdate is correct for the player, but it does not match the person who died in 1962. Sol Weinberg was born in NYC on 11/20/1895, and died in Nashville, TN, on 10/17/72.  His obit in the Nashville Tennessean of 10/19/72 does not mention his pro career, but I was able to contact a close relative who verified that this person was definitely the pro player. Evidently, he used his birth name of Weinberger for the remainder of his life after football.

8. PHILIP LEO 'PHIL' BRENNAN - 1930 Newark - attended Hyde Park Academy (Chicago), and Loyola U (Chicago). He was born 07/15/04 in Chicago, and died there on 10/31/65.  Data was obtained from Loyola Alumni Office, and verified by his family. Person who died in 1994 was not the player.

9. JOHN DONALD 'MICKEY" MACDONELL - 1923, 1925 Duluth, 1925-30 Chi Cards, 1931 Frankford. He was born 04/30/02 in Duluth, and died in Huntington Beach, CA, 11/01/83.  He was the younger brother of Allen MacDonell, who also played for Duluth, and is erroneously listed as McDonald on most sites. Various newspaper articles of the time period list them as brothers.

Thank you.

CURT GENTRY

ChiB 1966 / The NFL records his date of birth as 08 August 1941 in Waco TX. Bears media guides during his playing career also list the same details.

However, in a 1990 interview with the Chicago Tribune, Gentry admitted to lying about his age, stating that he was 28 when he joined the Bears (and 52 when the article was published).

FamilySearch.org has public record hits for a Curtis W Gentry in Waco, born 08 August 1937, which ties in with his story.

JIM FORDHAM

ChiB 1944 / The NFL records his birth on 6 December 1916 in Graymont (Laurens, GA). The Bears 1944 Media Guide has the same information. Most sources appear to record his full name as James Abner Fordham, with a vague (SSDI) date of death as April 1969.

However, the Jim Fordham born on 06 December 1916 in GA was in fact James Edward Fordham, born in Candler County, GA (source: Georgia World War II Draft Registration Cards on FamilySearch.org).

James Edward Fordham died on 05 April 1969 in Mexico (source: Reports of Deaths of American Citizens Abroad on Ancestry.com), which ties in with the April 1969 SSDI entry.

The Laurens County Historical Society has a post about Jim "Flash" Gordon, which includes a comment from his nephew, confirming his death in Mexico, from a heart attack.

He may well have been born in Graymont and the family just moved when he was very young, as they are in Olivetown (60-70 miles away), Candler, on the 1920 US Federal Census and Candler County in 1930 & 1940.
