There were between 90 and 95 players who played in the 1926 AFL league who never played in the NFL, either before or after their AFL experience. The accurate data on the majority of them is available on our site.  For those who may be interested in this league,  I will start listing the data on the limited number of players whose data is either missing or incorrect on other sites.

Group #1

1. PHILIP L 'PHIL" CORRIGAN   -   1926 Boston Bulldogs  -  attended Phillips-Exeter Academy (Exeter, NH), Boston College.. He was born 04/28/1898, died 07/11/49.  Obit in Boston Globe, 07/13/49, and also in the Boston College Alumni News of September, 1949.   The person who died in 1975 is not the player.

2. KNUTE LEONARD JOHNSON - 1926 Philadelphia Quakers  - attended Muhlenberg College.   He was born 12/06/1897  in  Union, SD,  and died  07/26/80  in PA.  Primary information came from Muhlenberg Alumni Office.  The person listed elsewhere,  who died in 1984 is not the player.

3.  WILLIAM JOHN "BOTCH' KOZLEK - 1926 Brooklyn Horsemen - attended Lebanon Valley College. - He was born  04/09/1896 in Dickson City,  PA,  and  died 09/   /87 in Wilkes-Barre, PA

Thank you.

4. MILES D. 'MIKE' EVANS - 1926 Cleveland Panthers - attended Ohio Wesleyan College. He was born 12/03/01 in Cleveland, and died there 11/11/82.

5.  EDWARD STRATTON 'NATE' COLEMAN - attended   Boston College   HS, Holy Cross University.  He was born 04/23/00 in Waltham, MA, and died there on 06/19/72.  He is erroneously listed as 'Ned Coleman' on various websites, but all articles  from his playing years refer to him as 'Nate'.   The person listed on other websites,  who died in 1973 , is not the  player.

6.  Charles Henry 'Tiny' Potter - Potter was listed on Cleveland's roster in the old Treat Encyclopedia, but not on any current sites.  However, I found a couple articles from 1926, including one in the Warren (PA) Tribune of 11/24/26, which mentions him playing for the Panthers. He attended Titusville (PA) HS, Washington and Jefferson College. He was born 06/18/04 in Titusville, PA, and died in Cleveland on 08/25/37.  Obit in Titusville Herald, 08/26/37.

Thank you

8. ARTHUR FRANCIS 'ART' RAY - 1926 Boston Bulldogs - attended Lynn Classical HS (MA), Holy Cross College - He was born in Lynn on 07/26/02, and died in Salem, MA, 07/08/43, from injuries suffered in a car accident. Obit is  in Lowell (MA) Sun, 07/08/43.

9. SAM W WHITEMAN - 1926 Chicago Bulls - attended U of Missouri. He was born 09/29/01 in Richmond, MO, and died in Las Vegas, NV, in 08/  /64. Data from Delta Upsilon fraternity newsletter.

10. CHARLES FRANCIS JOHNSTON  -  1926 LA Wildcats -  attended Stanford University - He was born 02/15/02 in Maury County, TN, and died in Los Angeles, 09/30/66. Data from CA Death Index, and family tree.

11. CHARLES UNDERWOOD 'MICKEY'  HUMMEL   -  1926    Brooklyn Horsemen - attended Lafayette College. He was born 03/21/1898 in New Jersey, and died in Rutland, VT, on 01/10/87.  Information received from Lafayette Alumni Office.   Person named Hummell who died in 1996 was not the player.

12. RAYMOND GERARD 'RAY' PATEN - 1926 Boston Bulldogs - attended Boston College.  He was born in Boston on 08/15/00, and died there on 03/09/83. This was a very confusing situation, since BC had a player named Ray Paten and a player named John Stephen 'Steve' Patten at the same time..  The Treat Encyclopedia listed Steve Patten as the player, and he's still listed on various websites. I had written to Steve Patten's family several years ago, and they provided the data I requested. However, they were surprised to find that he had played pro football, because  he had never mentioned it. Maybe that was because he was not the one who played for the Bulldogs.  In my research, I found a few references to Ray Paten on the Bullldogs, but no references to Steve Patten after his college career.

Thank you.

16. EARL FRANKLIN 'CLICK' CLARK  -  1926 LA Wildcats Head Coach -attended Everett (WA) HS, U of Washington, U of Montana.  He was born 08/09/1891 in Everett,  WA,  and died 04/10/59 in Seattle, WA.  Obit in Montana Standard (Butte), 04/11/59.

17. RAYMOND ERNEST 'RAY' WATTS - 1926 Cleveland Panthers Head Coach - attended Otterbein University. He was born 09/18/1896 in Powell, OH, and died in Berea, OH, on 06/03/69.   Obit in Findlay (OH) Republican Courier, 06/04/69.

This will be the last group of AFL I players and coaches that I will list.  The data for the majority of the other AFL-only players is listed on our web site, and has been confirmed as being correct.

Also, George Baldwin (1926 Brooklyn) and Joe Baldwin (1925 Cleveland NFL) are the same person.  I recently found the data card that I had received from  his widow back in the late 1970's, and she listed his real name as George, but his nickname as 'Joe'.

If and when I obtain information on any of those that are missing ,  I will post it.

Thank you.

I finally got a new one.

19. VINCENT HARRIS 'SWEDE"  OLSON  - 1926 Bkn Horsemen (AFL I) -  attended Rutgers Prep (NJ) - he was born 04/08/1896 in Hoboken, NJ, and died in Broward County, FL, on 06/20/68.  An article from 1926 mentioned him having been a star at Rutgers in 1915, along with his brother Jimmy. I could not find anything from Rutgers U. to corroborate this, but just happened upon something that mentioned him and his brother playing at Rutgers Prep.  I pieced the rest together from census, draft card, and death indexes.

Thank you.

20.  PAUL PHILIP BRENNAN - 1926 Bkn Horsemen (AFL I) - attended Fordham University. He was born in Brooklyn on 06/14/03, and died in NY 12/  /70.  He became an attorney after his football career, and was the head of the Municipal Civil Service Commission of New York City in the late 1940's and early 1950's. During the 'McCarthy Era',  he was the center of a controversy for demanding that all Civil Service employees sign a loyalty oath.  He is listed with the nickname of 'Red' on other sites, but I never found any articles using any name except Paul.

22. DONATO J 'DON'' MANELLA (MENNELLA) - 1926 Newark (AFL I) -- attended East Side HS (Newark, NJ) - played fb for Navy - He was born in Newark, 11/16/01, and died there, 07/21/72. I had difficulty finding information on him, because he is listed on various census records under his real name (Mennella), and his fb name. I was finally able to locate his nephew, who corroborated the birth and death data that I had, and added other information. Don played several years of minor league football in the NJ area, then became a longshoreman at the Port of Newark, holding card # 001. His nephew had Don's fb memorabilia, but lost it all in a major hurricane. The person from Troy, NY, listed on various sites, did not play football. Thank you.

23. BOLGER, JAMES LEE 'JIM' - 1926 Bkn Horsemen (AFL I) attended Norwich (NY) HS, Bkn Manual HS, St. Mary's U (CA), Oregon, Southern Cal, Villanova - He was born in Norwich, NY, 07/21/03, and died in Miami, 11/27/89. There is a very interesting article about him in the Brooklyn Eagle, 11/21/26. I was able to find the right Jim Bolger due to an article announcing his wedding, Bkn Eagle of 03/27/27,which mentioned his football career, along with his home address in Brooklyn. I located his application for a Seamen's card in 1920, which had his birth date, and his address, which matched the one in the wedding article. The person who died in 1968 is not the player.
